New Super Mario Brothers Wii Release Party
When the video game New Super Mario Brothers Wii was released, we were really excited for the opportunity to play with 4 people. Since we have a bunch of friends who like the Mario franchise, we thought it would be fun to have a party and invite them over. For the occasion, I couldn’t help myself but to make some themed treats.
In the pictures, there are three different kinds of treats – Pipes, Goombas and Red Mushrooms. All of these used different techniques and materials so I’ll break it down one by one. One big lesson I learned is that it is much harder to work with chocolate as a frosting than actual frosting, but for some reason I am much more comfortable with chocolate than I am with frosting. If you are going to try this, I would recommend only using chocolate for the dipped parts and using frosting for the decoration.
Pipes
These were the simplest of the treats. I made a batch of white cake batter from a box, and separated it into two bowls, one was died dark green and the other was died dark red and put to the side for the Mushrooms. They were both died with gel food coloring which helped to make sure that the colors were very rich. Then I poured the green cake batter into greased mini filled cake pans and baked according to the box directions. When the cakes were done and cooled, I placed two on top of each other and filled them with store bought chocolate frosting.
Goombas
These were more challenging to make, but I really love how they turned out and they were the yummiest. First I made a batch of brownie batter and then filled a normal sized greased muffin pan with the batter. Then, I filled up a greased mini muffin pan with the remaining batter. After they cooled, I cut off the top of the mini muffin brownies and put them to the side ate them. With the mini muffin brownie bottoms, I coated them in melted white chocolate and stuck them to the top of the brownie and flipped it over. I put two large circles of melted chocolate on the front of the regular brownie cupcake and put a brown sprinkle in the center, then two small triangles of melted chocolate and a brown sprinkle across. I broke a single Kit Kat in two and put them at a diagonal on top of the eyes using melted chocolate. For the feet, it is just Whoppers attached using chocolate to the bottom.
Red Mushrooms
These turned out to be the most challenging to make, but that was mostly due to my unwillingness to use products that would have made my life easier. The hardest part was the circles on the mushroom top, and it would have been easier if either I used frosting, or got some white circle sprinkles. Anyway, the mushroom base was very easy, I just filled a mini muffin pan with the red cake batter from previous and then dipped the bottom into white chocolate after the cupcakes had cooled. I placed two brown sprinkles vertically on the bottom. For the spots on the top, it is drops of white chocolate that I flattened with wax paper. My first option was going to be pushing in white chocolate chips, but they were too big. If it wasn’t for the spots, I think these would have been super cute. At least they were tasty and everyone pretended that they were growing bigger after eating them :)
