Back to the Future Hoverboard DIY

To celebrate the future happening today, I decided to create a Hoverboard!

It is made from a bright pink skateboard deck and covered with custom cut pieces of vinyl using my Silhouette. The design is based on this vector PDF that I found: DIY Overboard

I covered the pink parts with felt. The foot stand is made from a round plywood circle painted and then a piece of felt was added. It is attached to the deck through the holes with elastic that was weaved through and stapled to the plywood. The foot strap is a piece of elastic. The bottom of the board is just stick on puck lights.

To have a full look I dressed up like a hoverboard champion and wore this fabulous shirt from Rhett & Link. I also quickly sewed a scrunchie to complete my look.

Flower Diaper Wet Bag & Baby Leggings

Wet bags are such a super useful thing when having a newborn with how many diapers they go through. Over the years I’ve made a bunch from different materials, but this is by far my favorite combo.

Wet Bag

This tutorial from Lemon Squeezy Home is what I’ve used a bunch: Wet Bag Tutorial

PUL fabric is simply the best material for this and it really isn’t that bad to work with. It’s so great how much it is available now! Getting a teflon foot for the sewing machine made it super easy and I could skip the steps discussing how to keep the foot from sticking. It was fun to make the coolors coordinate but not match exactly too. The hardest part of this is cutting the sizes perfectly because I have such a hard time with it :)

Wet Bag

Another thing that I like to make for baby girls are little leggings. These keep the legs warm when they wear those cute little dresses. These are even easier to make since they are just made from socks. Take a look at this post for more info:

Baby Leggings

Note: These were made on April 5, 2013.

Kids Space Blast Off Glow in the Dark Shirt

My oldest son was going into surgery so I wanted to make him a special shirt to help him through the process.

Kids Space Blast Off Glow in the Dark Shirt

He absolutely loves space and rocket-ships, and some of his favorite shirts are glow in the dark. I thought they would be a great paring.

IMG_1784

First I cut out the rocket from two different colors of glitter heat transfer vinyl. Then I cut out the window and stars out of glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl. After that was the smooth heat transfer vinyl and ironing it all down. Once that was all done I set my sewing machine to a fancy stitch and stitched the rocket trail out of glow in the dark thread.

IMG_0864

This is close to how the glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl looks in the dark. As you can see the glow in the dark thread doesn’t work very well, so if I were to do this again, I would do the smoke trail in glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl too.

He Is Risen Kids Easter Shirt

My oldest wanted a Easter shirt that was an accurate representation of what we believed. He loves to talk about how Jesus died and rose again, so he was thrilled to have a shirt to celebrate with.
IMG_1741

I only had 20 minutes, so I searched Pinterest for some ideas and found this great printable – He is Risen Easter Printable. I took the concept and designed it in Silhouette Studio. After cutting it out of flocked heat transfer material and ironing it on we had a shirt and then it was off to church!

Kiss Me I’m Irish Kids Shirt

For St. Patrick’s Day I wanted to make my oldest son a shirt to celebrate his Irish heritage. The first year I made the shirt, I didn’t find out until afterwards that he actually has Irish on both sides of his families, so that is why there are two different numbers on the shirts.

The first shirt was done with fabric paint and flocked heat transfer material. First I designed it in Silhouette Studio. The shamrock and heart were just placed on top of each other and cut out using some scrap adhesive vinyl, making sure to have plenty of extra vinyl around the edges. Then the outer piece and the heart were placed on the shirt to form a stencil, then using fabric paint and a sponge, multiple coats of paint were applied.

While that was drying I cut out the flocked heat transfer material for the words and then placed it on and ironed the entire shirt to heat set the material and the paint.

The second shirt I made the following year was all heat transfer material. The shamrock is in glitter heat transfer material and the lettering is in flocked heat transfer material.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how these turned out and he was thrilled to have a shirt for St. Patrick’s Day. He wears it other times during the year too :)

Baby Leggings from Girls Socks

This was such an easy project! The hardest part was finding the colors of socks that the person who wanted it requested. I never knew there were so many different colors of girls socks, since I have two boys, but it was fun to step into the girl world a bit!

The baby leggings were made from pairs of girls socks based on this tutorial: BabyLegs

I used my serger and it was super quick and the recipient loved them :)

Valentine’s Day Boy’s Robot Heart Shirt

Valentine's Day Boy's Robot Heart Shirt

Valentine’s Day with little boys is fun, since they are still into holidays, especially when they involve candy! Since my son loves robots and the color red, I thought the perfect compliment was this super cute robot that was in the Silhouette Online Store.

To make the robot body I just used white flocked heat transfer material and cut it out. I purposely made it a bit big so he could wear it again the following year. Then, because I’m a girl who loves a little glitter, I cut out the heart portion out of red glitter heat transfer material. Then I just ironed it on and it was good to go!

Elmo Toddler Shirt Dress

Toddler Shirt Dress with Heat Transfer

As a thank you to a friend for watching our cats while we were away, I decided to make a cute little dress for her daughter who loves Elmo.

I saw this Ruffle Shirt Dress Tutorial on Pinterest and thought it was really cute. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any good colored tops, so had to use white, but it allows the Elmo to really let it stand out.

The process to making this was pretty easy. The hardest part was figuring out how long to make the ruffles, and if I did it over again I would have made them much longer. After cutting out the fabric strips I hemmed all of the raw outside edges with a pretty small seam allowance. Then I used my serger to ruffle the fabric edges (great tutorial here). When all of the ruffles were done, then I cut the shirt down to a good size and stitched all of the layers on the wrong side. The black ribbon was just a strip of black satin scrap that I stitched into a tube.

To make the Elmo head, I found a cute Elmo head SVG online and then cut it out using my Silhouette onto glitter heat transfer material. This design had a bunch of layering of the heat transfer material, but I was able to arrange it so that it was just 2 layers ironed on (black head base and then the head elements). I heard from my friend that the heat transfer started to peel off, so next time I would make sure to iron it on more. It’s always tricky with white not to iron too long.

Baby Boy Custom Onesies

Heat Transfer & Appliqué Boy Onesies

After getting the hang of using my Silhouette to make designs for shirts, I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for onesies for a friend’s baby boy to be.

Her other sons love construction vehicles and her husband works in the construction industry, so I went looking on the Silhouette Online Store for some fun vehicles. I really love how this turned out, especially the contrast of the yellow on the black giving more relate-ability to the construction motif. This was simply heat transfer material cut out and ironed on in alternating locations.

Construction Vehicles Heat Transfer Onesie

The next onesie is a cute little dinosaur that I found in a dingbat font and thought that some plant fabric would be fun to use as an appliqué. After ironing on sewable interfacing and cutting out the fabric, I just ironed on the dinosaur to the onesie and stitched around the edges.

Dinosaur Appliqué Onesie

This next onesie was the one that was by far the most difficult. The idea came to me to try to make a tool belt for a baby to hold some tools. I found a tool belt on the Silhouette Online Store and ungrouped it to get it down to the basic shape. I made the mistake of leaving the buckle in the belt which was really hard to try to stitch over. If I did it again I would just have left it out or used heat transfer material for it.

Once I cut out, ironed on, and stitched the belt, I used a Tool Font to cut out some tools in Heat Transfer material.

Tool Belt Appliqué and Heat Transfer Onesie

The last onesie was just a simple little firetruck cut out of two different colors of heat transfer vinyl. This was my first foray into layering heat transfer materials and it was easier than I thought, it just takes a bit of patience and ironing multiple times between layers. I made the design WAY too big for the onesie on this – don’t make the mistake of creating designs that are the wrong size for the material.

Toddler Boy Custom Shirts

These projects were my first foray into using my Silhouette Cameo
to design embellishments and appliqué for clothing. In fact, it was only the third project I ever did on it. The first project was the tags for the Keychain Wristlets and the second was a gift to a friend that I’ll try to post on sometime.

When I got the Cameo as a Christmas gift the first thing I started doing was looking at all of the different materials that would be fun to work with and happened upon a site that sold a whole bunch of Heat Transfer / T-Shirt Vinyl. I bought a sample pack of colors along with some samples of specialty ones that have the texture of footballs and baseballs. When it came time for my friend’s son’s 1st birthday, I knew exactly the shirt I wanted to make since he loved playing with balls. I found each of the different balls on the Silhouette Online Store and cut them out.

Ironing on the designs was super easy after weeding out the vinyl that was not needed. This shirt took maybe 5 minutes to make including finding the designs I was looking for. I was seriously hooked to heat transfer vinyl after this point!

Toddler Boy Sport Ball Shirt

The next shirt I made was much more complicated, but used another new technique with the Cameo. In my fabric scraps was some of my very favorite flannel ever, left over from MANY failed attempts at making a pair of pajama pants for the hubby (a subject for another post :P). Once there was a big enough fabric piece all that needed to be done was iron on some iron on sewable interfacing and then cut it out. Once the letters were cut out and ironed on, I went through the center of the letters using a straight stitch. In an ideal world it would have been better if it was an outline or a zigzag on the edge, but it was too intricate for my skills. Instead you could also use a permanent iron on interfacing.

Toddler Boy Name Appliqué Shirt

The final shirt I made was the one that gave me the hardest time. I used more heat transfer vinyl and the design was to represent all of the musical instruments that the boy’s parents played. The text is from Psalm 150 and is unfortunately where most of the problems were. For some reason this gold heat transfer vinyl kept melting, so I actually pulled up some of it and cut out new pieces, but it melted a second time and I called it good enough :) I like how the instruments look and how the super fine detail shows. The instruments here are actually from a dingbat font!

Musical Scripture Toddler Boy Shirt

P.S. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing the shirts that I did. They ended up running really small.
