Race Car Kids Birthday Party

Race Car Birthday Party

When my oldest son was about to turn 4 he loved race cars and wanted to be a race car driver when he grew up. So I decided to throw him a really detailed Birthday party. I went to Pinterest and found a *lot* of inspiration and started working on it a few months in advance.

When people walked up to the house they were greeted with a themed flower arrangement. I placed red and white flowers along with a flag garland that I made. The checkered flags were printed and cut using my Silhouette and then stitched together using a sewing machine.

Checkered Flag Flower Arrangement

Once the door was opened there were checkered flags, balloons, banners and pictures hanging. The pictures were from a trip we took to a local museum that had real race cars – Estrella Warbirds Museum & Woodland Auto Display.

Race Car Birthday Party Decorations

The Welcome Race Fans! banner was an altered version of one of the posters in the Race Car printable party kit from SIMONEmadeit that I used for a lot of the signage at the party.

Every kid got a Pit Crew Pass with their name on it. I printed out the passes and then used laminator pouches that were sent through the laminator. After punching a hole in the badge they were attached to the lanyards.

The pass allowed them entry into the Samuel International Speedway. I designed the signage in Adobe Photoshop Elements based on an old speedway sign.

Inside the speedway there was a stoplight repurposed from an adjustable 5 shade lamp. The lamp came with the shade colors and I replaced the white lights with colored lights. To make it look more like a stoplight I put a piece of black paper behind the 3 colored lights.

The kids absolutely loved the small racetrack that we put down. The outer track is a big roll of black construction paper. The black lines are extra wide black masking tape and the white lines are White Duck Tape. The green middle is just the construction paper painted with green paint. My dad was very meticulous and managed to make the edges round with lots of little pieces of tape. This took hours to put down but lasted over a year with kids playing on it and an actual car parking on top of it every day!

For decorations on the walls I wanted to put up some hubcaps, so I cut them out of metallic silver paper with a metallic red backing. The tire designs were all on the Silhouette store (1, 2, 3) and pieced together with thumb tacks in the center to look like bolts.

My dad made a racing ramp from foam board and wood dowels for Hot Wheels to go down. To keep the cars from flying across the room I sewed a long checkered bean bag stopper. The kids loved having races together.

My mom made this cute race car centerpiece from star balloons bought at the Dollar Tree decorated with race car cutouts and Checkered Flag Duct Tape. For activities there were Make-a-Race Car Sticker Sheets and race car coloring pages.

Red & Black Race Car Birthday Centerpiece

The stoplight toss in the backyard was made from a cardboard box covered with black construction paper with holes cut out for each of the lights. The lights were cut out of construction paper and taped to the box. In the baskets were bean bags sewn from red, yellow, green and checkered fabric.

For drinks there were bottles of Pepsi (Gas) and Apple Juice (Antifreeze) that had Checkered Flag Duct Tape taped over the label. The bottles were stored in a red divided bucket from Home Depot.

Racing Themed Drinks - Gas & Antifreeze

The cheese appetizers had little checkered flag sticks made from Full Sheet Label paper printed with a checkered pattern and cut into little strips. Since there was adhesive on the label they just had to be wrapped around the toothpick and then stuck into the cheese.

Checkered Flag Cheese Appetizers

We served a dinner of Macaroni and Cheese (Hub Caps) made from wheel pasta and cooked in the crockpot.

We also had Chicken Nuggets (Lug Nuts) but the only shapes I could find at the store were dinosaurs, so we had to use our imagination :)

Our son also asked for Hot Dogs (Gear Sticks) so we had those in a crockpot as well.

For deserts we had Chocolate Rice Krispy Treats with red, yellow, and green M&Ms shaped to be Stoplights.

We also had a plate of mini chocolate covered doughnuts (Tires).

Mini Doughnuts as Tires for Race Car Birthday Party

For our son’s “cake” we had a full size chocolate doughnut that I put a bunch of white frosting in the middle of to resemble a tire. The banner was designed in Silhouette Studio and the checkered posts are the same labels wrapped around wooden skewers. The final part was the candle and he loved it.

My printer really worked overtime on this party. It was really great to have a large format printer for all of the large photos and banners. The favors were Apple Newtons in snack baggies with labels.

Race Car Birthday Favors

This was by far the most work I’ve ever put into an event other than my own wedding. It’s taken a long time for me to work up the courage to want to post about it. This ended up being super hard on my family and I’ve worked really hard to reign in my ideas on future events so that it doesn’t happen again. The kids all had a great time, but I’m sure they would have had just as great a time with half of the things that were going on. The balance between being a dreamer and a doer is difficult, and if you are at all like me, I would encourage you to pray and ask your family if you are going over the line with your events :)

Note: This event happened on July 27th, 2013.

Kids Space Blast Off Glow in the Dark Shirt

My oldest son was going into surgery so I wanted to make him a special shirt to help him through the process.

Kids Space Blast Off Glow in the Dark Shirt

He absolutely loves space and rocket-ships, and some of his favorite shirts are glow in the dark. I thought they would be a great paring.

IMG_1784

First I cut out the rocket from two different colors of glitter heat transfer vinyl. Then I cut out the window and stars out of glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl. After that was the smooth heat transfer vinyl and ironing it all down. Once that was all done I set my sewing machine to a fancy stitch and stitched the rocket trail out of glow in the dark thread.

IMG_0864

This is close to how the glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl looks in the dark. As you can see the glow in the dark thread doesn’t work very well, so if I were to do this again, I would do the smoke trail in glow in the dark heat transfer vinyl too.

Baby Leggings from Girls Socks

This was such an easy project! The hardest part was finding the colors of socks that the person who wanted it requested. I never knew there were so many different colors of girls socks, since I have two boys, but it was fun to step into the girl world a bit!

Valentine’s Day Boy’s Robot Heart Shirt

Valentine's Day Boy's Robot Heart Shirt

Valentine’s Day with little boys is fun, since they are still into holidays, especially when they involve candy! Since my son loves robots and the color red, I thought the perfect compliment was this super cute robot that was in the Silhouette Online Store.

To make the robot body I just used white flocked heat transfer material and cut it out. I purposely made it a bit big so he could wear it again the following year. Then, because I’m a girl who loves a little glitter, I cut out the heart portion out of red glitter heat transfer material. Then I just ironed it on and it was good to go!

Valentine’s Reasons I Love Heart

Valentine's Day Heart Reasons I Love You

At our son’s preschool for Valentine’s Day they gave all of the parents hearts to take home and write on what our favorite things are about them. I decided to take this opportunity to play around with my Silhouette Sketch Pens.

To make the words into a heart shape, I found a heart shape and then dragged the text onto it. The images in the text are just dingbats from various fonts that I had around. Then I made several hearts of decreasing size and placed each of the lines of text on it. If I did it again I would probably skip the dingbats.

Then all that needed to happen was to put the heart on the mat and replace the cutting blade with the pen and change the settings in the software and “cut”.

The heart says:

You are filled with excitement! You love everything, but especially: rainbows, clothing, shoes, soccer, roller-skates, swimming, space, robots, and rocket ships.

You are the most loving person and we delight in your double kisses & hugs. You get so much joy from making others happy and helping to clean up.

You enjoy life so much that you would never sleep but instead run around. You love to talk and sing and make us laugh. You enjoy hiding from snakes and scary monsters and laugh so much when we tickle you.

Samuel
You are our little love

49ers Football Logo Kids Shirt

49ers Football Logo Kids Shirt

We decided two days before Super Bowl XLVII to visit my parent’s annual Super Bowl party. Since my family are huge 49er fans, this was a big year. I tried to find a 49er shirt that was my son’s size near us, but there wasn’t anything. Since I had a bunch of heat transfer vinyl, I decided to trace the logo using the Silhouette software with the different pieces for the colors. Then each piece was cut out of heat transfer vinyl and ironed onto a red T-shirt. The heat transfer vinyl used was black flocked, white flocked, and gold glitter.

Everyone was really surprised that it wasn’t something that was purchased in a store, which made me really happy since I only spent around 20 minutes on it. We had a great time at the party even though they didn’t win!

Elmo Toddler Shirt Dress

Toddler Shirt Dress with Heat Transfer

As a thank you to a friend for watching our cats while we were away, I decided to make a cute little dress for her daughter who loves Elmo.

I saw this Ruffle Shirt Dress Tutorial on Pinterest and thought it was really cute. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any good colored tops, so had to use white, but it allows the Elmo to really let it stand out.

The process to making this was pretty easy. The hardest part was figuring out how long to make the ruffles, and if I did it over again I would have made them much longer. After cutting out the fabric strips I hemmed all of the raw outside edges with a pretty small seam allowance. Then I used my serger to ruffle the fabric edges (great tutorial here). When all of the ruffles were done, then I cut the shirt down to a good size and stitched all of the layers on the wrong side. The black ribbon was just a strip of black satin scrap that I stitched into a tube.

To make the Elmo head, I found a cute Elmo head SVG online and then cut it out using my Silhouette onto glitter heat transfer material. This design had a bunch of layering of the heat transfer material, but I was able to arrange it so that it was just 2 layers ironed on (black head base and then the head elements). I heard from my friend that the heat transfer started to peel off, so next time I would make sure to iron it on more. It’s always tricky with white not to iron too long.

Baby Boy Custom Onesies

Heat Transfer & Appliqué Boy Onesies

After getting the hang of using my Silhouette to make designs for shirts, I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for onesies for a friend’s baby boy to be.

Her other sons love construction vehicles and her husband works in the construction industry, so I went looking on the Silhouette Online Store for some fun vehicles. I really love how this turned out, especially the contrast of the yellow on the black giving more relate-ability to the construction motif. This was simply heat transfer material cut out and ironed on in alternating locations.

Construction Vehicles Heat Transfer Onesie

The next onesie is a cute little dinosaur that I found in a dingbat font and thought that some plant fabric would be fun to use as an appliqué. After ironing on sewable interfacing and cutting out the fabric, I just ironed on the dinosaur to the onesie and stitched around the edges.

Dinosaur Appliqué Onesie

This next onesie was the one that was by far the most difficult. The idea came to me to try to make a tool belt for a baby to hold some tools. I found a tool belt on the Silhouette Online Store and ungrouped it to get it down to the basic shape. I made the mistake of leaving the buckle in the belt which was really hard to try to stitch over. If I did it again I would just have left it out or used heat transfer material for it.

Once I cut out, ironed on, and stitched the belt, I used a Tool Font to cut out some tools in Heat Transfer material.

Tool Belt Appliqué and Heat Transfer Onesie

The last onesie was just a simple little firetruck cut out of two different colors of heat transfer vinyl. This was my first foray into layering heat transfer materials and it was easier than I thought, it just takes a bit of patience and ironing multiple times between layers. I made the design WAY too big for the onesie on this – don’t make the mistake of creating designs that are the wrong size for the material.

Toddler Boy Custom Shirts

These projects were my first foray into using my Silhouette Cameo
to design embellishments and appliqué for clothing. In fact, it was only the third project I ever did on it. The first project was the tags for the Keychain Wristlets and the second was a gift to a friend that I’ll try to post on sometime.

When I got the Cameo as a Christmas gift the first thing I started doing was looking at all of the different materials that would be fun to work with and happened upon a site that sold a whole bunch of Heat Transfer / T-Shirt Vinyl. I bought a sample pack of colors along with some samples of specialty ones that have the texture of footballs and baseballs. When it came time for my friend’s son’s 1st birthday, I knew exactly the shirt I wanted to make since he loved playing with balls. I found each of the different balls on the Silhouette Online Store and cut them out.

Ironing on the designs was super easy after weeding out the vinyl that was not needed. This shirt took maybe 5 minutes to make including finding the designs I was looking for. I was seriously hooked to heat transfer vinyl after this point!

Toddler Boy Sport Ball Shirt

The next shirt I made was much more complicated, but used another new technique with the Cameo. In my fabric scraps was some of my very favorite flannel ever, left over from MANY failed attempts at making a pair of pajama pants for the hubby (a subject for another post :P). Once there was a big enough fabric piece all that needed to be done was iron on some iron on sewable interfacing and then cut it out. Once the letters were cut out and ironed on, I went through the center of the letters using a straight stitch. In an ideal world it would have been better if it was an outline or a zigzag on the edge, but it was too intricate for my skills. Instead you could also use a permanent iron on interfacing.

Toddler Boy Name Appliqué Shirt

The final shirt I made was the one that gave me the hardest time. I used more heat transfer vinyl and the design was to represent all of the musical instruments that the boy’s parents played. The text is from Psalm 150 and is unfortunately where most of the problems were. For some reason this gold heat transfer vinyl kept melting, so I actually pulled up some of it and cut out new pieces, but it melted a second time and I called it good enough :) I like how the instruments look and how the super fine detail shows. The instruments here are actually from a dingbat font!

Musical Scripture Toddler Boy Shirt

P.S. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing the shirts that I did. They ended up running really small.
